Peter Poelzig · 1970 · Berlin
See it from across the Landwehrkanal, where the full concrete slab lines up.
Peter Poelzig designed the ward block of the Klinikum am Urban, built between 1966 and 1970. Willy Brandt laid the foundation stone, and it was the first major municipal hospital building in postwar West Berlin.
The nine-storey block holds over 700 beds. Rows of recessed windows and exposed concrete give it a monolithic face, and the hospital still uses it.
