Krematorium Baumschulenweg

Axel Schultes, Charlotte Frank · 1999 · Berlin

Stand in the main hall among the 29 concrete columns and watch the light fall from above.

Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank won the 1992 competition and built the crematorium from 1996 to 1999. Soon after, they designed the Federal Chancellery.

The building is a seamless exposed-concrete block of about 49 by 67 metres. Its 29 spun-concrete columns fill the main hall, and it won the Architekturpreis Beton in 1999. It continues the raw concrete tradition of brutalism.
