A wave you can walk over

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology — MAAT — opened in 2016 on the bank of the Tagus in Lisbon's Belém district, the first building in Portugal by Amanda Levete's London studio AL_A. Its low, sweeping form is sheathed in three-dimensional white ceramic tiles that catch and scatter the shifting river light, and its roof rises as a gentle ramp so visitors can walk over the museum and look out across the water — the building doubles as public landscape.

MAAT deliberately converses with its neighbour, the early-twentieth-century Tejo Power Station, linking old industry and new culture along a reclaimed riverfront. Fluid where the power station is heavy, it has quickly become one of Lisbon's signature contemporary landmarks and a favourite gathering place at sunset.
