Günter Reiß, Bernd Fundel, Klaus Tröger (Hochtief AG), Otto Patzelt · 1981 · Berlin
Stand at Landsberger Allee and Danziger Straße to see the long glass and steel front.
The GDR opened the SEZ on 20 March 1981 after 27 months of building. Hochtief AG from West Germany designed it in secret, with Günter Reiß responsible for the design. It held a wave pool, ice rink, bowling alley and ten restaurants.
It closed in 2002. Berlin refused heritage listing in 2025 and planned to demolish it for housing, but the district stopped the demolition in February 2026 over species protection. Its glass front makes it late modern, and it belongs to the same era as Berlin's brutalism.
